Responding to evolving educational assessment requirements, including the implementation of the Tes Kemampuan Akademik (TKA), requires English teachers to continuously strengthen their pedagogical competence and assessment literacy. To support this professional development, the TEFLIN Southern Sulawesi and Maluku Chapter, in collaboration with the Center for Language Development and Services (LP2B) and the Master’s Program in English Education at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar, organized the English Teacher Competency Development Program (Pengembangan Kompetensi Guru Bahasa Inggris – PKGBI) 2026. The program was held on Friday, July 31, 2026, at the Language Center of Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar.
This one-day professional development program aimed to strengthen English teachers’ understanding of assessment literacy and effective reading instruction while equipping them with practical skills relevant to current educational assessment requirements. The workshop comprised three main sessions: an overview of the TKA, the development of high-quality multiple-choice test items, and strategies for teaching reading comprehension, with particular emphasis on textual, inferential, and evaluative reading skills.
The program was officially opened by representatives of the organizing institutions, who emphasized the importance of continuous professional development in improving the quality of English language teaching in Indonesia. They also highlighted TEFLIN’s commitment to supporting English teachers through collaborative learning opportunities that address current educational challenges and developments in national assessment.
Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in interactive presentations, collaborative discussions, and practical activities facilitated by experienced academics and English language education practitioners. In addition to attending the presentations, participants analyzed assessment tasks, discussed common classroom challenges, and shared effective practices for improving students’ reading comprehension and assessment performance. During the hands-on sessions, they worked collaboratively to develop multiple-choice test items aligned with sound assessment principles and the TKA framework.
The workshop also provided valuable networking opportunities for English teachers and university lecturers from various educational institutions across Southern Sulawesi and Maluku. The collaborative environment encouraged participants to exchange experiences, reflect on their classroom practices, and generate ideas for improving English language instruction and assessment.
By the end of the program, participants had developed a stronger understanding of the TKA framework and the principles underlying valid, reliable, and learning-outcome-aligned classroom assessments. They also gained practical strategies for developing students’ textual, inferential, and evaluative reading skills. Beyond strengthening individual professional competence, the workshop expanded professional networks among English language educators and reinforced the spirit of collaboration promoted by TEFLIN.
PKGBI 2026 demonstrated the TEFLIN Southern Sulawesi and Maluku Chapter’s continued commitment to promoting sustainable professional development for English teachers. Through initiatives such as PKGBI, TEFLIN seeks to equip educators with the knowledge, practical skills, and professional support needed to improve the quality of English language teaching and assessment in Indonesia. Future PKGBI programs are expected to further promote innovation, collaboration, and excellence while responding to the evolving needs of teachers and learners.
