The TEFLIN Chapter Sumatera Utara successfully held a Pengembangan Kompetensi Guru Bahasa Inggris (PKGBI) program on June, 19th at FBS Hall Universitas Negeri Medan. The event brought together 25 English teachers from SMKN 1 Percut Sei Tuan, SMK BM Sinar Husni, SMK Telkom 2 Medan, SMK Swasta Sinar Husni 2 TR, SMA Negeri 2 Kota Tanjungbalai, SMA Negeri 15 Medan, SMA Negeri 11 Medan, SMA Negeri 12 Medan, MAN 1 Medan, and MAN 2 Medan to strengthen their competencies in response to the recent implementation of Tes Kemampuan Akademik (TKA).

This professional development program aimed to enhance teachers’ reading competence, deepen understanding of TKA reading demands and formats, and equip teachers with the skills to design effective and valid reading test items.
Led by Prof. Dr. I Wayan Dirgeyasa, M.Hum., Prof. Dr. Sumarsih, M.Pd., Prof. Dr. Siti Aisah Ginting, M.Pd., Dr. Masitowarni Siregar, M.Ed., Dr. Rahmad Husein, M.Ed., Dr. Meisuri, M.A., Dr. Fahri Haswani, S.Pd., M.Hum., Winda Setiasari, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D., Dr. Anna Riana Suryanti Tambunan, S.S., M.Hum., and Mahmud Layan Hutasuhut, S.Pd., M.Hum., Ph.D. from Universitas Negeri Medan the sessions covered key topics such as TKA: An Overview, Developing Multiple-Choice Test Items, Strategies for Teaching Reading at the Textual Level, Strategies for Teaching Reading at the Inferential Level, and Strategies for Teaching Reading at the Evaluative Level. Participants engaged in interactive workshops, collaborative tasks, and hands-on test item development, while also sharing insights from their own teaching contexts.

Through presentations, workshops, collaborative discussions, and hands-on activities, participants gained practical knowledge and experience in designing TKA-oriented reading assessments. As an output of the program, participants collaboratively developed a set of at least 40 TKA-oriented reading test items. Overall, the program increased participants’ confidence in implementing reading instruction and assessment practices aligned with TKA requirements while strengthening professional collaboration among English teachers in North Sumatra.
