On July 26 and August 2, 2025, TEFLIN North Sumatera conducted a Deep Learning Training and Workshop at Hall of the Faculty of Languages and Arts, Universitas Negeri Medan (UNIMED). This in-person event served as a continuation of a previous online session on deep learning, further expanding the participants’ understanding and application of deep learning in language teaching.
The workshop was attended by 53 participants from various educational institutions across North Sumatera. Designed as an active and collaborative learning environment, it introduced practical strategies for teaching the four key language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—using deep learning principles.
The event was officially opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Arts UNIMED, Dr. Zulkifli, M.Sn., and attended by TEFLIN President, Prof. Dr. Utami Widiati, M.A., Ph.D., who emphasized the importance of continuous professional development in delivering meaningful and adaptive learning experiences.
Initiated by Dr. Masitowarni Siregar, M.Ed., the program featured six experienced trainers from major universities in North Sumatera:
- Dr. Masitowarni Siregar, M.Ed. – Universitas Negeri Medan
- Dr. Meisuri, M.A. – Universitas Negeri Medan
- Dr. Fahri Haswani, S.Pd., M.Hum. – Universitas Negeri Medan
- Dr. Muhammad Yusuf, S.Pd., M.A. – Universitas Sumatera Utara
- Benny Ichsanda Rahman Hz, M.Pd. – Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara
- Asrita Sari, S.Pd., M.Li. – Universitas Negeri Medan
Each trainer delivered practical, skill-based sessions on how to incorporate deep learning into classroom instruction. The content focused on active listening strategies, speaking fluency through reflection, critical reading comprehension, and structured writing based on cognitive processes.
With a week between the two sessions, participants were encouraged to apply what they learned in the first meeting and return to share their reflections and insights in the second. This workshop reflects TEFLIN North Sumatera’s commitment to fostering reflective, innovative, and impactful language teaching, while also strengthening collaboration among educators in the region.
