On July 26 and August 2, TEFLIN DKI Jakarta held a successful two-day Deep Learning Training and Workshop (DLTW) at Bina Nusantara University. The event gathered 47 English teachers and lecturers from various parts of Jakarta, representing institutions from junior high schools to universities, all united in their goal to enhance their professional skills in applying deep learning in English language teaching.
This training was part of TEFLIN’s nationwide effort to help educators rethink their teaching methods, moving away from superficial knowledge delivery toward deeper, more reflective, and student-centered learning. The workshop introduced participants to the core principles of mindful, meaningful, and enjoyable learning, demonstrating how these concepts can be applied in teaching all four language skills.
Each session followed a structured cycle involving lesson modeling, lesson plan (RPP) analysis, collaborative revision, and peer teaching. This method enabled participants to engage with deep learning both as students and as teachers. They observed model lessons, reflected on instructional strategies, revised their lesson plans using the deep learning framework, and practiced teaching the updated lessons with their peers.
The sessions were led by lecturers from UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, Universitas Negeri Jakarta and Bina Nusantara, who also serve as TEFLIN board members and regional leaders of TEFLIN DKI Jakarta:
- Dr. Itje Chodidjah, M.A.
- Prof. Siti Nurul Azkiyah, Ph.D.
- Imas Wahyu Agustina, M.Pd.
- Desi Purnama K, S.Pd., M.M.
- Melda Yohana Anwar, S.Pd. M.Pd.
What set this program apart was its focus on practical implementation. Teachers were encouraged to critically assess how their classroom activities could enhance student engagement, encourage critical and creative thinking, and support the overall development of learners. Reflection, discussion, and peer feedback fostered a collaborative learning environment that promoted experimentation and growth.
The event ended with a post-training evaluation and sharing session, during which participants expressed enthusiasm and optimism about incorporating deep learning into their classrooms. Many mentioned that the training not only broadened their teaching methods but also rekindled their passion for creating more meaningful learning experiences.
Through this initiative, TEFLIN DKI Jakarta reaffirms its dedication to improving the quality of English language education and building a community of educators prepared to lead transformative learning in their own settings.
