The Deep Learning Training and Workshop was organized to strengthen the professional capacity and pedagogical competence of English teachers in Sulawesi and North Maluku. The program aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of the Deep Learning approach and to support its effective application within English language classrooms, in line with contemporary developments in teaching and learning.
The activity targeted English teachers at the junior and senior secondary levels (SMP and SMA/SMK) across Sulawesi and North Maluku who are committed to improving their instructional practices. Implemented through the Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran (MGMP), the program emphasized the role of teacher professional communities in fostering instructional innovation and continuous improvement at the school level.
The training and workshop contributed significantly to the enhancement of participants’ pedagogical competence. Teachers developed a more comprehensive understanding of the concepts, principles, and implementation strategies of Deep Learning that are relevant to 21st-century education. In addition, MGMP members strengthened a collaborative and innovation-oriented learning ecosystem, laying the foundation for a learning culture that encourages students to think critically, creatively, and reflectively, while applying knowledge in real-world contexts.
To ensure sustained impact, several follow-up actions are recommended. Continuous support from schools and local education authorities is needed to integrate the Deep Learning approach into quality assurance policies and classroom practice. Further professional development programs, such as mentoring, classroom-based assistance, and advanced training, are also encouraged. In addition, similar initiatives should be replicated and scaled up in other districts and cities across Sulawesi and North Maluku to expand their benefits for English language teaching.
