Mataram, July 6, 2025 — In an inspiring effort to enhance the quality of English language education in the region, a Deep Learning Training and Workshop was successfully held on Friday and Saturday, July 5–6, 2025, at Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).

This two-day professional development event gathered enthusiastic English teachers from across NTB to explore and apply the principles of Deep Learning—a student-centered approach that promotes meaningful, mindful, and joyful learning experiences.

This program was specially designed to equip English educators from junior high schools (SMP), senior/vocational high schools (SMA/SMK), and higher education institutions with strategies that foster deeper thinking, critical reflection, and real-world application in English language classrooms.

The training was facilitated by three leading figures in English education: Dr. Afif Ikhwanul Muslimin, S.S., M.Pd. (UIN Mataram), Imansyah, M.Pd. (Universitas Pendidikan Mandalika – UNDIKMA), and Prof. Nurul Lailaltul Khusniyah, M.Pd. (UIN Mataram), whose insights and guidance provided a strong foundation for understanding and implementing Deep Learning in diverse educational settings.

Building Capacity Through Practice and Reflection

Over the course of the workshop, participants engaged in dynamic discussions, collaborative lesson design, and reflective activities. They explored how Deep Learning differs from surface-level instruction and how it encourages students to become active, critical, and creative learners. The facilitators emphasized the importance of designing lessons that connect meaningfully with students’ lives, promote self-awareness, and create a positive, joyful classroom atmosphere.

One of the workshop’s key strengths was its practical orientation. Teachers were not only introduced to theoretical frameworks but were also guided to develop concrete teaching portfolios. These included: Detailed lesson plans based on Deep Learning principles, sample teaching materials, reflections on classroom application, and individual action plans to implement in their respective schools.

Fostering a Culture of Professional Collaboration

Beyond individual outcomes, the workshop also fostered a spirit of collaboration among English teachers in NTB. Participants were encouraged to form professional learning communities to continue exchanging best practices and supporting each other in implementing Deep Learning approaches. A follow-up mentoring plan is also being proposed to ensure sustained impact.

The event concluded with a strong sense of commitment among participants to rethink their teaching practices and advocate for student-centered, transformative learning in their classrooms. Evaluation reports collected during the workshop highlighted positive feedback on both content and delivery, and provided valuable recommendations for future trainings.

A Step Forward for English Education in NTB

This initiative marks a significant step toward creating a more adaptive and innovative educational ecosystem in NTB. By equipping teachers with deep learning strategies, the region is investing in long-term improvements in student outcomes and educational quality. The organizers and participants hope that similar programs can be replicated in other regions and subject areas, expanding the reach and impact of Deep Learning in Indonesia’s education system.

For continued success, collaborative support from schools, local education authorities, and teacher associations is essential, ensuring that the seeds of this training grow into a sustainable movement for quality education in NTB and beyond.
