TRANS SUMSEL — In an effort to improve the quality of language teaching in schools and universities, The Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language in Indonesia (TEFLIN) and Universitas Sriwijaya held an activity themed “Deep Learning Training and Workshop” on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at the UNSRI Language Center (UPT Bahasa), Jl. Srijaya Negara, Bukit Besar, Palembang.
This activity was attended by 35 participants from various regions in the Sumatra, Jambi, and Bangka Belitung regions who came as lecturers, teachers, and postgraduate students alike. This workshop discussed the deep learning approach to improve the effectiveness of learning four English language skills, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Sary Silvhiany as the Regional Coordinator (Korwil) of TEFLIN South Sumatra, Jambi and Bangka Belitung said that TEFLIN’s focus this year is to provide teacher trainings on Deep Learning to support government programs, in this case the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen). “We moved quickly early to provide assistance and training to teachers and lecturers who are members of TEFLIN, so that they can convey to other colleagues about the application of Deep Learning in learning,” she said. She added that the focus of discussion in this training was how to apply a learning approach that emphasizes the concept of deep understanding and better mastery of competencies in students. “The goal is to improve the quality of education by creating deep learning that is conscious (mindful learning), significant (meaningful learning), fun (joyful learning), and relevant to students’ lives,” she explained.
Likewise, according to the Dean of FKIP Universitas Sriwijaya Dr. Hartono, the collaborative activity between UNSRI and TEFLIN in the form of training and Deep Learning Workshop is very important to implement. “This training aims to help the government in preparing teachers, especially English teachers to welcome the new school year by studying the Deep Learning approach and how to integrate the approach into learning activities in their respective classes,” he added. He explained, FKIP UNSRI has teaching staff/lecturers who have become facilitators and have been equipped by the central government on skills in the field of this Deep Learning approach. “We always update the teaching staff at FKIP UNSRI so that what develops about these issues is always followed,” he added.
The resource people for this Deep Learning Training and Workshop include Prof. Utami Widianti (TEFLIN President), Prof. Ali Saukah (TEFLIN Advisory Board), Prof. Suwarsih Madya (TEFLIN Advisory Board), Dr. Hartono (Dean of FKIP UNSRI), Sary Silvhiany, Ph.D., Dr. Rita Inderawati, M.Pd., Artanti Puspita Sari, Ph.D., Titab Ratna Wulandari, M.Pd., and Masitoh, S.Pd.Gr.
