Palembang, June 28, 2025 — In order to strengthen the competence of English teachers and lecturers in Indonesia, The Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language in Indonesia (TEFLIN) in collaboration with Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI) successfully held a Training and Workshop session on “Deep Learning in English Language Teaching”, Saturday (28/6), at the UNSRI Language Center (UPT Bahasa), Bukit Besar, Palembang.
The training, attended by 35 participants from various regions in South Sumatra, Jambi, and Bangka Belitung, included lecturers, teachers, and postgraduate students. The training focused on implementing a Deep Learning approach in teaching the four main English skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Sary Silvhiany, Ph.D., as the Regional Coordinator (Korwil) of TEFLIN South Sumatra, Jambi, and Bangka Belitung, explained that this workshop is a form of TEFLIN’s commitment to encourage a paradigm shift in language teaching practices in Indonesia, in accordance with the policy direction of the Ministry of Education.
“We want teachers to understand and apply Deep Learning as an approach oriented toward in-depth understanding, competency mastery, and mindful, meaningful, and joyful teaching,” she said. Furthermore, this training emphasizes the importance of building contextual, humanistic, and real-world-relevant learning experiences, especially in the face of today’s complex educational landscape.



The Dean of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI), Dr. Hartono, M.A., who was present at the event, also expressed his full support for the training. He stated that the faculty continues to encourage lecturers and teachers to integrate the latest pedagogical approaches into their teaching practices.
“This activity is very strategic in equipping teachers to face the challenges of the 21st century. Deep Learning is not just a trend, but an approach that enables students to think critically, creatively, and contextually,” he emphasized.
This workshop was held on the initiative of TEFLIN central office with leading national figures in the field of English education and the Deep Learning approach, including:

• Prof. Ali Saukah, M.A., Ph.D. – TEFLIN Advisory Board

The resource persons for this workshop were lecturers from FKIP Unsri, Universitas Tridinanti lecturers, and Teacher Leaders who are also active students of the English Language Education Masters program who have participated in the online ToT from TEFLIN central office, after holding a cross-chapter meeting with the TEFLIN central management at UPI Bandung during the 70th TEFLIN International Conference at the university:

Through presentation sessions, interactive discussions, and reflective practice, participants are invited to explore how Deep Learning can enrich language learning through scaffolding, problem-solving, integration of life values, and character building.
The workshop received a warm welcome from the participants. They noted that it not only broadened pedagogical horizons but also provided a collaborative space for sharing experiences and innovations in English teaching. As a follow-up, TEFLIN (South Sumatra-Jambi-Babel) and FKIP UNSRI (Unsri) are committed to making this an ongoing program, offering regular training, academic forums, and scientific publications to support Deep Learning practices in the field.
