Universitas Negeri Padang’s Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Alumni, Dr. Refnaldi, M.Litt., opened the Deep Learning Training organized by TEFLIN (The Association for the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language in Indonesia), in collaboration between FBS UNP and TEFLIN Sumatera Barat Chapter. The program took place at the FBS UNP Auditorium on July 26, 2025, and ran for two days.

Dr. Refnaldi stated that curricula and teaching models continuously evolve in line with current developments and challenges. Therefore, teachers must also keep pace, especially in applying those changes to English language instruction.

The training aimed to enhance English teachers’ understanding and skills in applying the Deep Learning approach in their teaching. It focused not only on deep instruction but also on fostering thinking and learning strategies that encourage students to fully understand concepts and connect them to real-world contexts. To add, it is likewise targeted at improving English teachers’ competence in applying Deep Learning across educational levels.

The Head of West Sumatra Province’s Education Office, represented by the Office Secretary, Suranto, M.Pd., appreciated the initiative, noting its value in elevating English instruction quality and preparing future generations. He added that rapid technological and societal changes demand parallel evolution in teaching methods.

Dr. Yuli Tiarina, Chair of TEFLIN West Sumatra Region and Head of the English Language and Literature Department at FBS UNP, reported that the ToT (Training of Trainers) involved 50 participants: 11 junior high school teachers, 23 senior high school teachers, 12 vocational secondary school teachers, and 5 lecturers.

She also confirmed that the workshop was scheduled in two sessions, on July 26 and August 2, 2025. Trainers included: Dr. Yuli Tiarina (listening), Witri Octavia, M.Pd. (speaking), Dr. Fitrawati, S.S., M.Pd. and Dr. Nina Suzanne, S.Pd., M.Pd. (reading), and Dr. Lili Perpisa, M.Pd. (writing).
