The Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language in Indonesia (TEFLIN) West Java–Banten Chapter held a Deep Learning Training Workshop (DLTW) at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Language and Literature Education, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), Bandung.

This workshop is part of TEFLIN’s national training series aimed at enhancing English teachers’ and lecturers’ understanding and skills in applying deep learning principles in English language classrooms.

The event was attended in person by 61 participants—English teachers and lecturers of English education—from various cities across West Java and Banten, including Serang, Cilegon, Bekasi, Tangerang, Bogor, Cianjur, Sukabumi, Cimahi, and Bandung. They took part in two days of intensive training on Saturday and Sunday, 21–22 June.

Nenden Sri Lengkanawati, the Coordinator for the West Java–Banten Chapter, played a central role in designing and overseeing the programme to ensure it was not merely theoretical, but responsive to the real needs of educators on the ground.

“This activity not only enriches participants’ knowledge, but also strengthens the network among English teachers and lecturers across the West Java and Banten regions,” she stated.

According to Nenden, the workshop marks an important step in supporting teachers to deliver English instruction that is conscious, meaningful, and joyful, in line with the spirit of the National Curriculum and the demands of 21st-century education.

“The workshop was structured into four main sessions, each focusing on the integration of deep learning into one of the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing,” she explained. Nenden also led the session on Speaking, in which participants explored deep learning approaches through the context of discussing the energy crisis.

In the Listening session, Finita Dewi invited participants to directly experience a listening lesson built on deep learning principles.

Ika Lestari Damayanti led the Reading session, offering practical strategies for text analysis, with emphasis on text structure, vocabulary, and contextual relevance to students’ lives.

The final session, on Writing, was facilitated by Emi Emilia, who introduced writing instruction using the Genre-Based Approach (GBA). In this session, participants were tasked with producing descriptive texts that took into account elements of meaning and well-being.

Interactive Atmosphere

Throughout the training, the atmosphere remained highly interactive and enthusiastic. Participants were not merely passive recipients of information—they were actively involved in various modelling activities. They engaged in the learning processes that they would later apply in their own classrooms and discussed concrete strategies for integrating deep learning into their practice.

A variety of pedagogical approaches were employed, including Presentation–Practice–Production (PPP), Problem-Based Learning, Project-Based Learning, and the Genre-Based Approach. Each allowed for participant reflection and full engagement.

As part of the final evaluation, participants were asked to analyse their own lesson plans (Rencana Pelaksanaan Pembelajaran, or RPP). They examined the extent to which deep learning principles were embedded in their planning and engaged in peer discussion with colleagues.

The programme concluded with a peer teaching session, in which participants implemented their revised lesson plans through teaching simulations. This ensured that the learning gained did not remain at the conceptual level but was translated into practical skills ready for application in their respective schools or universities.
