On June 21–22, 2025, TEFLIN West Java and Banten successfully organized a two-day Deep Learning Training and Workshop (DLTW) at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), Bandung. The event brought together 61 English teachers and lecturers from various cities in West Java and Banten—ranging from junior high schools to universities—in a shared commitment to strengthening their professional capacity in implementing deep learning within English language education.

The training was part of TEFLIN’s national initiative to support teachers and educators in rethinking instructional practices, shifting from surface-level knowledge delivery to deeper, more reflective, and student-centered learning. The workshop introduced participants to the key principles of mindful, meaningful, and joyful learning, and how these can be translated into classroom practice across all four language skills.

Each session was carefully structured around a cycle of lesson modeling, RPP (lesson plan) analysis, collaborative revision, and peer teaching. This approach allowed participants to engage with deep learning both as learners and as educators. They experienced model lessons, reflected on teaching strategies, revised their lesson plans using the deep learning framework, and practiced delivering the revised lessons among peers.
The sessions were facilitated by lecturers from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia who also serve as TEFLIN board members and TEFLIN West Java–Banten regional leaders:

  • Prof. Dr. Nenden Sri Lengkanawati, M.Pd.
  • Prof. Emi Emilia, M.Ed., Ph.D.
  • Ika Lestari Damayanti, M.A., Ph.D.
  • Dr. Finita Dewi, M.A.

What distinguished this program was its emphasis on practical application. Teachers were encouraged to critically examine how their classroom activities could foster deeper student engagement, promote critical and creative thinking, and support the holistic development of learners. The use of reflection, discussion, and peer feedback created a collaborative learning environment that encouraged experimentation and growth.

The event concluded with a post-training evaluation and sharing session, where participants expressed enthusiasm and optimism about integrating deep learning into their own classrooms. Many noted that the training not only expanded their pedagogical repertoire but also reignited their passion for designing more impactful learning experiences.

Through this initiative, TEFLIN West Java and Banten affirms its commitment to advancing quality English language education and fostering a community of educators who are ready to lead transformative learning in their respective contexts.
