The Association for the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language in Indonesia (TEFLIN) successfully held a two-day online workshop titled “TEFLIN Deep Learning Training and Workshop (DLTW)” on May 17–18, 2025, via Zoom from 08:00 AM to 12:00 PM (Jakarta Time). The same program was delivered on two consecutive days to accommodate the large number of participants and the limited Zoom capacity.

This professional development program aimed to introduce the principles of deep learning in English language teaching and enhance the use of classroom English among primary, junior and senior high school teachers across Indonesia.

With over 500 English teachers in attendance, the workshop drew participants from various provinces and schools across the country. Representatives from the TEFLIN Executive Board and members of the national DLTW organizing committee also joined the event, showing strong support for the initiative.

The two-day workshop, facilitated by the master of ceremonies, Ms. Harumi Manik Ayu Yamin, M.Hum., began with an opening ceremony and a welcome speech by Prof. Utami Widiati, President of TEFLIN. The first key session, “An Overview of Deep Learning,” was delivered by Prof. Ali Saukah and Prof. Utami Widiati, and moderated by Ms. Maria Hidayati, Ed.D. This session laid the foundation for understanding how deep learning principles can be meaningfully applied in English language classrooms.

The next session, “Classroom English Training for English Teachers,” featured engaging presentations from Prof. M. Zaim, Ms. Dewi Rochsantiningsih, Ph.D., and Ms. Evynurul Laily Zein, Ph.D. These experts offered language expressions, practical strategies, and examples of how teachers can effectively use English in their classroom to support student learning.

Participants reported gaining new insights and strategies from the sessions. Many expressed their appreciation for the materials of the presentations and the relevance of the topics discussed. The event not only boosted participants’ understanding of deep learning in ELT but also inspired them to apply the concepts in their local teaching contexts.

Following this national event, regional coordinators will organize in-person follow-up trainings in their respective areas to cover more topics related to deep learning. In particular, the training will focus on integrating deep learning with teaching four English language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).

This event was fully funded by TEFLIN as part of its continuous commitment to improving the competence of English teachers across Indonesia.
