On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, a “Workshop on Improving the Competency of English Teachers,” themed “Adapting the Independent Curriculum for Schools in Island and Rural Areas,” was held. This event was jointly organized by Udayana University, Tribuana Kalabahi University, and the Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, and East Nusa Tenggara chapters of TEFLIN. The hybrid event was attended by over 150 participants from various institutions across Bali, NTB, NTT, Maluku, Papua, Java, West Sumatra and North Sumatra.

The workshop was attended by the President of TEFLIN, Prof. Utami Widiati from Universitas Negeri Malang, the Coordinator of TEFLIN Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, and East Nusa Tenggara Chapter, Prof. Dr. Ni Luh Nyoman Seri Malini, S.S., M.Hum., from Udayana University and the Dean of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Antonius Saetban, S.Pd.K, M.Pd. The online keynote speaker for the workshop was Prof. Emi Emilia, M.Ed., Ph.D., from UPI and the onsite facilitators were Adolfina M.S Moybeka, M.Pd, Shanty G. Pandie, M. Pd, Christi A. Makaikosa, M.Pd from Universitas Tribuana Kalabahi.

This workshop focused on equipping English teachers with the skills and strategies needed to implement the Kurikulum Merdeka effectively in rural and island settings. By integrating the local context into English language instruction and developing adaptable, low-resource teaching methods, teachers can meet national curriculum standards while enriching students’ learning experiences by connecting English learning with their local environment and culture. The workshop spanned interactive sessions, practical exercises and collaborative group work. As the result of this workshop, English teachers were able to design structured and innovative lesson plans.
