TEFLIN Bali, NTB and NTT Chapter in collaboration with Udayana University Language Centre held a English as Medium of Instruction (EMI) Dissemination workshop on March 14-15, 2023 located in the Gedung Aula FISIP and online through WebEx. The event was attended by more than 85 participants who represented 14 Faculties at Udayana University and teachers in Bali, East and West Nusa Tenggara. This workshop was facilitated by Dr. Sisilia Halimi (Universitas Indonesia), Dr. Dana Waskita (Institut Teknologi Bandung), Dr. Ni Luh Nyoman Seri Malini and Sang Ayu Isnu Maharani (Udayana University), and was moderated by Dr. Ni Made Sofia Wijaya and Ida Ayu Mela Tustiawati, M.A.
The event was organized by Dr. Ni Luh Nyoman Seri Malini (Coordinator, TEFLIN Bali, Nusa Tenggara Barat, and Nusa Tenggara Timur Chapter) in collaboration with Sang Ayu Isnu Maharani, M.Hum. (Head of Udayana Language Centre) and opened by the Vice Rector on Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. I Gde Rai Maya Temaja. In his remarks, he stated that the workshop supports the quality of education because it is in line with the vision of Udayana University. “Internationalization is the goal of almost all universities in Indonesia, including Universitas Udayana (UNUD), in adapting to globalization and the industrial revolution 4.0. Academic members of UNUD are responsible for developing their competence and skills in accordance with Universitas Udayana’s vision to become an excellent, self-reliant and culture-oriented university at the national and international levels. Consequently, international courses have been conducted in several faculties by implementing English as a Medium for Instruction despite the challenges to fully use English during the course,” he said.
In her presentation, Dr. Sisilia Halimi emphasized that EMI belongs to a family of approaches covering different contexts of teaching subjects through another language that often have similar properties. She briefed the continuum of EMI in practices, EFL, ESP, CBI, CLIL, Immersion and EMI. She added that some challenges faced by lecturers in the implementation of EMI are related to the knowledge related the course materials in English, the complexity of vocabulary in certain courses and limited time to learn about this. Students find difficulties in understanding complex ideas/concepts in English, and lecturers worry about using too many/too few national languages during courses. In addition, students’ inadequate English proficiency will cause problems for them to understand the course contents, and difficulties to interact with students when using English. To resolve those challenges, Dr. Dana Waskita briefly explained on the use of translanguaging. Dr. Seri Malini added some insights about giving feedback to students and Sang Ayu Isnu Maharani emphasized on relevant language expressions used in teaching. The workshop was concluded by the practices of microteaching represented by each group of participants.
