Webinar 1 – Spies and elephants: A discussion about technology in language learning and assessment

The New Directions in Language Assessment conference in Denpasar, Indonesia, concluded on the 10th of December with a panel discussion on technology and its potential impact on language learning, teaching and assessment. This panel discussion drew together five thinkers working at different points of intersection between technological innovation and language learning or assessment and asked them to share their views on how technology can, is and will impact language assessment and learning. Each grabbing a bit of the proverbial blind man’s elephant, the panel members discussed all the amazing things that are happening in technology in the educational field, shared their concerns about uncritical adoption of technology, and looked at specific use cases in assessment, learning and teaching. There is also a spy story in there somewhere!

This webinar gives a wider audience the opportunity to view the panel discussion and to engage with two of the panel members involved: Professor Barry O’Sullivan and Dr Mariano Felice from the British Council. Questions will be taken from attendees, live or through the chat.
The final section of the webinar features two video submissions from presenters who could not attend the New Directions conference in Denpasar in person. Viewers are invited to watch the video presentations beforehand and then join online to put questions and comments to the presenters. One presentation focuses on technology and assessment, the other showcases an example of how formative feedback can be integrated into the classroom.

Webinar 2 – Standards and frameworks: Integrating teaching, learning and assessment

With five renowned speakers from around the world, the first panel discussion of The New Directions in Language Assessment 2022 conference was on the topic of synergies, tensions and the benefits of ‘common’ dimensions of standards in language education.

Assessment is one part of the Comprehensive Learning System (CLS) (O’Sullivan, 2020) which combines curriculum, delivery and assessment. At the centre of this triumvirate are standards and these drive the three parts of the CLS. The speakers drew on their experience to discuss the issues around standards and frameworks in their contexts sharing their insights into the importance of standards and frameworks, the role of standards in assessment and the nature of standards in different contexts.

This webinar provides the opportunity for a wider audience to not only view the panel discussion but also to interact with two of the panel members: Dr Jamie Dunlea, Manager & Senior Researcher of the Assessment Research Group at the British Council and Dr Neus Figueras Casanovas from the Ministry of Education in Barcelona, Spain. Questions will be taken from attendees, live or through the chat.
