Bandung (13/12/2018), TEFLIN Chapter West Java and Banten has organized a workshop on extensive reading for teachers for secondary schools. The workshop invited three professional instructors in the field: Prof. Fuad Abdul Hamied, Ph.D. from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, Indonesia; Willy Renandya, Ph.D. from National Institute of Education, Singapore; and Yuseva Ariyani Iswandari, M.Ed. from Universitas Sanata Dharma, Indonesia.

The workshop was based on the issue underlined by World Economic, that there at least six literacy skills that should be to face the 21st-century challenges, namely reading and writing literacy, numerical literacy, financial literacy, science literacy, culture and civic literacy, and IT Literacy. However, based on PISA score, Indonesian young learners’ numerical, science, and reading skills are still behind those of other OECD countries. Therefore, improving Indonesian young learners literacy skills, especially reading skills should be put in the first priority. Some experts believe that reading skills, especially in the context of English as a foreign language, can be enhanced not only through intensive reading but also through extensive reading. In order to be able to run extensive programs, English teachers should be equipped with knowledge, understanding, and skills on how to successfully run an extensive reading program at their own schools. To achieve the goal, the Coordinator of TEFLIN West Java and Banten, Prof Nenden Sri Lengkanawati, in collaboration with the English Department of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia and MGMP SMP of Bandung City had organized a workshop on how to implement extensive reading programs at secondary schools in Indonesia last December 13, 2018.

The three instructors worked on the following topics: (1) The role of extensive reading in enhancing learners’ autonomy in IR 4.0 era, (2) Foundation of Extensive Reading, and (3) Administering extensive reading program (the workshop).
